Eleanor Brooks was born in Lincolnshire in 1925 and was married to the author Jeremy Brooks. She lived in Llanfrothen from 1953 to 1960 and returned in 1990 to live in the same cottage. Her ‘Mrs Spinks’ travelling exhibition has visited galleries across Wales and England.
“I work figuratively and directly from my subject whether it is a portrait, still life or landscape. Through working I enter into a conversation with my subject in which a transmutation takes place. This results from close observation of the sensual tension between material, matter and subject. The quality of looking entails an emotional experience and my aim is to reproduce that truthfully.”
My work is a personal response to my environment and is mainly semi abstract/landscape. I paint primarily in acrylics but use other media too including machine embroidery. I love colour and how the use of it can evoke a feeling or memory. I live in the beautiful remote valley of Croesor in Snowdonia where the Moelwyn Mawr and the Cnicht dominate the skyline. The weather in its variant forms paints the landscape in different hues and moods and inspires me constantly.
I trained as a scientist as well as an artist and this is reflected in the way I investigate and examine ideas. I use drawing, painting and sculpture as a way of deepening my understanding of the natural world around me.

“I work with freshwater pearls and Swarovski crystals creating delicate and unique pieces. My work is inspired by the wild and beautiful landscape changing through the seasons.”
Art for me is an attempt to demonstrate communication in different mediums and see how that communication manifests itself. The medium I use depends on the atmosphere or mood I want to create, sometimes ink or mixed media, also acrylic, and oil painting. In the past I have had solo exhibitions and participated in many mixed exhibitions. My studio is at my home which is situated on the side of the Moelwyn mountain. Inspiration is all around me.
